Nonduality proved in the laboratory

April 6, 2010

One of the descriptions of nonduality says that things appear to be highly individualistic while, at the same time, being non-separate. That is, things are separate and non-separate at the same time.

Quantum physics has now demonstrated this paradox…

And it’s all because of a tiny bit of metal — a “paddle” about the width of a human hair, an item that is incredibly small but still something you can see with the naked eye.

UC Santa Barbara’s Andrew Cleland cooled that paddle in a refrigerator, dimmed the lights and, under a special bell jar, sucked out all the air to eliminate vibrations. He then plucked it like a tuning fork and noted that it moved and stood still at the same time.

The experiment puts to rest Lao Tzu’s claim that “those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know.” Or at least it requires re-interpretation of what Lao Tzu said. Turns out you can do both at the same time. Understanding that things both move and remain still, can help in understanding nonduality, religion, and metaphysics, which is to say that it can help you understand yourself: “Who am I?” or “What am I?”

Why was I told we can’t grasp nonduality?

April 6, 2010

The following is from Google Answers:

Question:

Why was I told we can’t grasp non duality?
For the last couple of years the concept of duality has been undermined in my mind. Perhaps by the grace of God the true nature of things is being revealed to us. I mentioned this to my friend who told me to stop thinking about non duality since humans are not capable of understanding it. Is he right?

Two Answers:

your friend is very wrong…..

Had it not been for the breath of life, there would be no understanding… no reasoning.. no movement… no goals…. no purpose…..

Humanity is certainly capable of understanding……

But, duality is necessary!! Even with God……

The spirit (from man = sperma “the living thing”) and the body (from woman = the shell “the empty thing”) must meet to become whole…..

without one or the other, there is no life…….

Duality is necessary….. without duality, there is no whole…..

Someone once asked:

what is:
1+1……

I say, it is whole….. 1 is only half of the whole picture…. once the other 1 is present, then the two can be whole…..

Once together, they create a whole life……

Without duality, each is searching for another 1…….

Ginger

Non duality as in the elimination of the subject-object distinction? Well you wouldn’t be able to ‘grasp’ that, now would you? Or if you mean some kind of mystical enlightenment, that would be a thing to be experienced, not understood, right?

I wonder if the name of the contributor of the second answer is “Fred.” Fred and Ginger. Certainly they are dancing together:

What is the secret to understanding nonduality?

March 26, 2010

What is the “secret” to understanding non-duality?
Everything appears to our senses to be dual here, hot & cold, light & dark, male & female.
Yet many speak of Oneness & Unity.
What understanding bridges the gap?
Thank You for answering.
Many Blessings!

Are you watching a movie of a blank screen?

March 7, 2010

Perhaps you think you see the blank screen upon which the movie of your life is projected.

However, it might be another movie … of a blank screen.

Here’s another anti-definition of nonduality:

Defining nonduality is like making a movie of a blank screen and casting it on a blank screen.

Don’t think too much about the metaphor. Just realize that there is an offset between the movie of the blank screen and the raw actuality of the blank screen.

Nonduality: Definitions, Non-Definitions, Un-Definitions, and Anti-Definitions

March 6, 2010

There are endless definitions, non-definitions, un-definitions, and anti-definitions of nonduality. They are all pointings to the nondual.

I like to say that nonduality means there are not two things, so no things are separate. Yet things appear distinct, separate, and highly individualistic. That’s paradoxical, crazy, humorous, and not the case. But it’s a definition you can sort of “get.” It gives the mind something to chew on. It’s a definition with traction.

Just minutes ago I heard Peter Fenner on a video say that nonduality is “going beyond existence and non-existence.” There’s no traction with that definition. It’s “way beyond the mind,” Fenner says. It’s a different way of defining nonduality; it’s more of a non-definition. But it’s a pointer.

Dan Berkow has said that “defining nonduality is like adding legs to a snake.” That’s an un-definition.

Kenneth Madden recently gave this anti-definition: “Non-duality or Advaita then becomes the last refuge of the individual who is under threat. It is fodder for the mind. It becomes the new, best concept in town as it were.”

Stephen Wolinsky, at the last Science and Nonduality Conference announced cheerfully and insistently to a large audience, “There’s no such thing as nonduality!” Another anti-definition. He says the same thing on the video I mentioned above.

So there ya go. For another hundred definitions please visit http://nonduality.com/whatis.htm

Start with a definition you can “get” but don’t settle for it. Question it. The consideration of definitions of nonduality is itself a form of inquiry, a spiritual practice.

The Nonduality Definer

January 25, 2010

Silence, non-definitions, anti-definitions, koan-like responses, or a whack with a Zen stick, may be the best responses to the question, “What is nonduality?”, but allow me to be more language-bound. Responding the following points will guide you in constructing a commonplace definition of nonduality:

A statement that nonduality means non-separation

A confession from your knowing

A statement that defining nonduality requires experiencing it

A method for experiencing nonduality

A metaphor

A reference to an authority

A disclaimer based on the paradox exposed by trying to define nonduality

Add another element, such as etymology, quotations from different periods of time, or different short definitions such as would appear in a dictionary.

Submit your definitions as a comment to this entry.

Also, if you are a lexicographer or have an serious interest in the history of the use of the words nonduality, nondual, or nondualism, and would like to work on a project defining those words for the Oxford English Dictionary, leave a comment or contact me at jerry at nonduality.com.

Nonduality Satsangs: A Mission Statement

March 27, 2009

James Traverse, Dustin LindenSmith, and I are putting together Nonduality Satsangs in Atlantic Canada. Visit our website, Nonduality.ca, in progress, and which still needs tightening and organizing.

Here is a mission statement for our satsangs. Keep in mind that the audience is Atlantic Canada and that there may be a number of people living here who are unfamiliar with nonduality and satsang. In a separate post I’ll give specific guidelines for starting your own nonduality gatherings, wherever and whoever you are.

Mission Statement

Nonduality Satsangs are interactive gatherings of ordinary people that present a context shift that allows your mind to rest in its homeground knowingly. Nonduality Satsangs adhere to no single teacher, guru, or tradition. They resort to all teachers, gurus, traditions, and fields of knowledge.

What is satsang? Satsang means the company of truth. In Nonduality Satsangs people come together to hear, express, and value the truth of their nature and existence. This is done through presence, silence, discussion, consideration of scriptures and texts from all traditions; through meditation, lectures, chanting, singing, and within an atmosphere of celebration, humor, and joy.

What is nonduality? Nonduality means “not two.” There are not two things. There is only ________ (fill the blank with the term you prefer: God, consciousness, oneness, reality, Truth, awareness, Presence, Self, Brahman, quantum reality, emptiness, I Am, etc.) Yet we witness infinite distinct forms. The teaching of nonduality addresses the apparent paradox that there are not two things AND that all things are distinct and highly individualistic.

Why Nonduality Satsang? Because people hunger to know the truth of their existence, and there is no independent Nonduality Satsang currently offered in Atlantic Canada. The time is right for this teaching. People around the world are already coming to the teaching of nonduality through such avenues as Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, Buddhism, quantum theory, the poet Rumi, A Course in Miracles, Thich Nhat Hahn, Yoga, Reiki, various books and websites, and through their own experiences and insights.

We are open to all teachings and teachers of truth and we encourage, support, develop, and publicize other independent Nonduality Satsangs.

The Experience of Nonduality

February 27, 2009

I interviewed James Traverse a couple days ago and this is one of the videos. There will be a few more.

In this interview, following my introduction, James takes me through an experiential exercise in nonduality. Try to go through it with me. In the beginning, I intentionally paused before responding.

The exercise points to what the experience of nonduality actually is. This and other exercises are available through James’s book and CD, Nidra Yoga. To learn more about James’s work, visit BeingYoga.com

Slipping Nonduality Into the Drink of Civilization

October 16, 2008

Greg Goode, author, philosophical counselor, teacher, speaker, was one of the featured guests at this past weekend’s Boulder Dialogues on Nondual Awareness, in Colorado. I was not a featured speaker but did have the opportunity to address the gathering for a few minutes. Greg writes elsewhere in this blog…

October 15, 2008
Dear Jerry,

It was great to see you at the Boulder Dialogues on Nondual Awareness this last weekend. I still remember with fondness the conference we organized back in the mid-90’s. It might have been the first non-teacher-centric nonduality conference ever.

Anyway, this last Saturday, you gave an impassioned talk on spreading the word on nonduality by creating tiny 30-second elevator spiels on nonduality. I’ve already begun to do that. And it’s working.

Warmly,

–Greg

I want to tell you a little about the Boulder Dialogues and what I said to the gathering.

The Boulder Dialogues

Greg was one of six featured speakers. There were also a few dozen guests, of which I was one. I don’t want to say much about the meeting until it begins to appear in public. For now, I’ll say it was a beautifully conceived and conducted project put on by a man with a track record of very successful creative endeavors.

Greg was a masterful featured presenter. At one point, he was emotional, laughing, crying, demonstrating his broad love of life. An instant later he used precise language to stop one of the other guests in the tracks of deconstruction. I hope they catch it in the editing, because that’s what practical nonduality is all about, allowing life to flow by applying diamond hard attention to what arises or presents itself.

The Elevator Spiel

The elevator spiel, or 30 second speech, that Greg talks about in his letter above, was described in a recent blog entry. I’ll repeat part of it:

How to Bring Nonduality to the Streets
October 2, 2008

Nonduality may be brought to the streets by use of the word. When you use the word nonduality, someone may ask what you mean. Create a 30 second explanatory speech.

Here is a version of a 30 second speech explaining nonduality: “You know when people talk about being one with something? Being one with your work, being one with nature, or being so close to someone that you feel at one with that person? Nonduality means to be at one. Nonduality goes deeply into the idea of being at one with someone or something.”

Create your own 30 second speech. It has to come from you. Tailor it to the person you are addressing.

Perhaps the briefest elevator speech was told to me by a 21 year old female student at Naropa University, who I met at the gathering. She explains nonduality to her non-spiritually inclined parents as “beyond good and bad.” She says they get it.

The power of the word “nonduality”

At the Dialogues, I basically repeated the blog entry above. I also added that the word nonduality (or nondualism, nondual, nondualistic) has power.

First, the word is new, fresh, and untainted by loose-end connotations, such as the words Zen, consciousness, or spirituality are. Its meaning strikes at the bottom line of life and is healing to all things and the world.

Second, the word is a key that unlocks research tools, Google, for example.

Third, the word nonduality is a portal, opening to every field of knowledge. For example, see the list of nondual perspectives.

Fourth, it is a magnet. Once a person hears the word nonduality, it becomes a magnet drawing attention to other appearances of the word. As well, the user of the word becomes a magnet for others who are sensitive to the appearance of the word “nonduality.”

Fifth, the word “nonduality” is a “red pill.” Recall that in the movie The Matrix, Neo was offered either a blue pill or a red pill. The blue pill would have returned Neo back to his dream world whose unreality he sensed but did not understand. The red pill would have awakened him to who he really was, which would have begun his journey through life and to the source.

The word “nonduality” could work as a red pill if you value its meaning enough to follow it as deeply as you can. When Neo was being given his choice of pills, his teacher and mentor, Morpheus explained to him:

This is your last chance. After this there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes…. Remember, all I’m offering is the truth, nothing more….

Write a 30 second spiel on what nonduality is, and slip it into the drink of civilization, today.

Thanks to Greg and others at the meeting who expressed support for this form of action in the world.

In other words, be open about your interest in nonduality. That’s all it comes down to. I used to keep nonduality as my Internet secret and never talked about it in public. I’ve come out. It is time to do that, I would like to suggest.
